We live in a hyperconnected world. But what kind of communication do we want? The Parole O_Stili project, a reflection and commitment that can make a difference.
“Social awareness project against online hate”. This is how Parole O_Stili (the pun means “hostile words” or “words or styles”) defines itself, an initiative that considers words as opportunities for LIFE.
Biblical wisdom already warned about the potential of words: they can make us grow, sustain us, and also destroy us. The Letter of St. James (3:4-7) states this clearly:
Take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
Today, we’re hyperconnected and can potentially have our say with the entire world. But… how do we do it? Hate speech and cyberbullying are serious problems, with potentially far-reaching consequences.
But even if we’re not haters, what communication style do we want to adopt?
Words of LIFE or words of NON-LIFE?
The Manifesto, like a Decalogue for Non-Hostile Communication, is a solid starting point. “They are 10 principles of Style. A commitment to be made”.
10 Principles of Non-Hostile Communication
1. Virtual is real
Online, I only write or say what I would dare to say in person.
2. You are what you communicate
The words I choose reflect who I am. They represent me.
3. Words shape thought
I take the time I need to express my ideas clearly and thoughtfully.
4. Listen before you speak
No one is always right, including me. I listen with honesty and an open mind.
5. Words are bridges
I choose words to understand, to make myself understood, and to get closer to others.
6. Words have consequences
I recognize that what I say or write can have real consequences, big or small.
7. Share with care
I share texts and images only after reading, evaluating, and understanding them.
8. Ideas can be debated. People should be respected
Those whose views and opinions differ from mine are not enemies to defeat.
9. An insult is not an argument
I reject offensive or aggressive language, even when it supports my opinion.
10. Silence speaks too
When it’s wiser to stay silent, I do.
